Recipe for homemade applesauce with little sugar

Ein Glas Apfelmus neben einem Teller Kaiserschmarrn - A jar of applesauce next to a plate of Kaiserschmarrn

Applesauce is totally easy to make at home. Homemade applesauce tastes much better than the store-bought! For baby food just leave out the lemon, sugar and cinnamon!

I used to get annoyed throwing away half the jar of applesauce from the supermarket. We never ate the whole thing. Since I can’t buy applesauce in India, I just started making it myself. It’s totally easy and hardly any work!

Homemade you can vary the amount of course, you don’t have to make the 500g that I have as a base in the recipe below. The 500g would be mostly too much for us.

Tastes absolutely great with potato fritters or Kaiserschmarrn and kids love it!

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 500 g sour apples
  • ½ lemon (omit for baby food)
  • 2-3 cm cinnamon (omit for baby food)
  • 2 Tbsp sugar (omit for baby food)
  • 3 Tbsp water

Instructions

  • Squeeze one half of a lemon and set aside.
  • Peel and core the apples. Cut the apple into small pieces about 2cm in size.
  • Mix the lemon juice with the apple pieces. This way they won't turn brown so quickly and will keep their color.
  • Bring the water together with the cinnamon, sugar and apple pieces to a boil in a small saucepan and steam over a mild heat with a lid for 15 minutes until soft.
