Swabians are known for 2 things: an amazing dialect and even better food. Since my father has relatives on the border of Swabia (my grandpa is originally from there), we often had Swabian dishes at home.

The name Swabia refers in origin to a Germanic tribe. The region is located north of Lake Constance, partly in Baden-Württemberg and partly in Bavaria. In Bavaria, there is a district of Swabia, but it covers only a part of the actual region of Swabia. There is a beautiful map in the German Wikipedia, which you can see on the right. Certainly not quite up to date 😀.

Swabia is known for some characteristic regional dishes. The best known are probably spaetzle, egg noodles made from very moist dough, and Maultaschen, noodles filled with meat and vegetables, but Schupfnudeln, lentils, Hefezöpfe and Dampfnudeln are also classic Swabian dishes. Since I like all of these very much, I will try to recreate as many as possible.

The great thing about Swabian cuisine is that it can be cooked almost everywhere. Some of the recipes are a bit complicated, but if you miss German cuisine abroad, you can use them. And they are among my favorite dishes anyway.
